SAD NEWS ABOUT VRENI RIEDLER

By Julia Newton, November 2024

I heard recently about the death of former active ZIWA member, Vreni Riedler. She was very well known in ZIWA as Chairlady of the Swinging Sixties group which she ran single-handed for many years.

I went on many of her days out, usually on weekdays. She knew places, organisations, museums and towns in Switzerland, her home country, that were fun to discover under her guidance. We normally travelled by public transport so that everyone could join in, and she often got discounts on the entry price to interesting places.

CHANGES FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR CANCER SUPPORT IN SWITZERLAND

By Lisa Bond, October 2024

As many of you have already heard, ZIWA will no longer have its own cancer support group. Before explaining why, I want to first thank Julia Newton.

It was Julia’s idea to start this group back in 2013. Originally it was called Talking About Breast Cancer. As a survivor herself, Julia wanted to help others deal with their diagnosis and exchange information to better support each other, particularly because nothing else like this existed for English speakers in the Zurich area. She also established a website to share her story and a great deal of information. You can still access this at https://breastcancersupportzurich.wordpress.com/.

I joined the group shortly after joining ZIWA in 2014. My mom was also a breast cancer survivor and I myself live with neuroendocrine cancer. Sometime along the way we changed the name to just Cancer Support to include more people with other types of cancer. In 2020 Julia decided to step down and I took over her role as the leader for the group.
