Reach Out & Volunteer
ZIWA’s Reach Out initiative, which started in 2009, enables our members to become involved in various community projects and organisations in the Zürich area. The chosen projects hopefully inspire ZIWA members to participate in and contribute to Swiss society by donating their time and talents to the wider community.
Operation Flying Croissant Project (otherwise known as the Bread Run)
ZIWA joins forces with the local Rotaract club and AWCZ to take part in “Operation Flying Croissant”. Every Thursday evening, 2-3 volunteers (1 driver, 2 helpers) visit three different bakeries in the Kreuzplatz area of Zürich, just as they are closing, to collect bakery products left over from the day’s sale. They then deliver these goods to local social centres.

Disabled Riding Programme / Behinderte Reitsportsgruppe Kolbenhof BRSK
A non-profit association founded in the 1970s by a general practitioner who happened to be a rider and who knew that therapy with animals and specifically with horses would help the disabled to improve their lives. You can help once every second week or just once in a while to step in for volunteers who are sick or on holiday. We will train you until you feel secure. Your task will be fetching the horses from their box, leading them in the riding hall and letting them warm up. When the participants arrive, we help them mount the horse one after the other. After leading them around the riding hall for 10-15 minutes, we help the riders dismount. When we close, we clean the horses’ hooves and take them back to their boxes.

English Around the World (EATW)
This project began in 2011. We work together with a town’s youth service to provide an English-speaking camp one week every year. The goal is to help build a bridge of cultural understanding. Children age 9-12 come together to boost their confidence in speaking English through a variety of activities such as games, crafts, sport and food.
